Tierpark Hagenbeck: Hamburg’s original zoo
Hagenbeck Zoo houses 210 different animal species from all over the world, a tropical aquarium and the new Arctic themed Eismeer section.
Tierpark Hagenbeck has established itself as one of Germany's most popular zoos. The zoo has been family-owned for six generations, ever since its opening in 1907. Back then, separating the animals' enclosures by moats instead of fences was considered quite novel! Over the years, the zoo has gained a good reputation for successfully breeding rare and endangered species such as the Asian elephant and the Siberian tiger.
In addition to the regular zoo, the four-level Tropical Aquarium and the Eismeer polar section both show new angles on wildlife (literally!) as visitors can walk through rather than alongside the enclosures. In effect, a trip to the zoo is almost like travelling to far-away, exotic places.
